Fuguing from Obrecht to Bach: Piffaro + Kleine Kammermusik

One of the great contributions of renaissance and baroque composers to the history of western music has been the stylistic intricacy of the fugue. Carl Jung listened and relistened to Die Kunst der Fuge out of a feeling that it could tell him more of the nature of music than perhaps any other composition (Laurens van der Post, Jung and the Story of Our Time).

This program celebrates the compositional style that permeated life for centuries and still engages composers of our own day. We will journey from Obrecht to Bach, facilitated by the artistry of our guest ensemble, Kleine Kammermusik, a baroque chamber ensemble showcasing the baroque winds that were the direct descendants of our renaissance instruments. Together with harpsichord and baroque cello, Kleine Kammermusik will join Piffaro’s winds to recreate a multitude of polyphonic textures, emotional affects and sonic textures that will delight, entertain and awe just as it did in its own day.
